Saona Island is a national park in the southern part of the Dominican Republic. The history of Saona island is that it shows the discovery by Christopher Columbus in 1494 during his second voyage to the Americas. It was also inhabited by Taino people who heavily produced Cassava, the starchy tuberous root of a tropical tree, used as food in tropical countries, here. Saona Island is known for its relaxing, tropical vibes with many untouched natural wonders. Saona Island also has gorgeous oceans and beaches with extraordinary scenery. Saona Island is part of Cotubanamá National Park, a world heritage site, so Saona Island’s wildlife and natural elements have been conserved so that tourists can truly enjoy the real island. The only way to get there and to leave is by boat. Tourists can not stay on the island because there are no hotels or resorts on the island, but it is a short distance away from Punta Cana. Saona Island is of great importance to the Dominican Republic since it represents the history of very important people like Christopher Columbus.
